Nokia Lawsuit Could Cost Apple Up to $1 billion

A Nokia patent lawsuit could cost Apple as much as $1 billion in back payments, argues Strategy Analytics' Neil Mawston. The analyst tells Reuters that because of the over 34 million iPhones Apple has shipped to date, the company could owe anywhere between $200 million and $1 billion, depending on the terms of a settlement. Pund-IT analyst Charles King suggests that a $400 million figure more likely, assuming a 2 percent royalty scheme. read more...

iPhone/AT&T Exclusivity in U.S. to End?

AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega strongly implied that the carrier's exclusive deal to sell the iPhone in the U.S. is ending, although he gave no details in a conference call with analysts. Asked in a question-and-answer session what AT&T plans to do should the exclusive deal come to an end as has been rumored, de la Vega said the iPhone is a good source of new subscribers, but is only part of a smartphone portfolio that gives good results. read more...

Performance Showdown: Windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard

As someone who uses both platforms for work and personal entertainment, Dong Ngo of CNET has been wanting to do a performance comparison between Windows 7 and Mac OS X since he first got his hands on the Windows 7 RTM (the final build of the OS) more than two months ago, but decided to wait until he could compare the two apples to apples. (No pun intended.) The right time seems to be now, as Snow Leopard has been out for a while and has even been updated to 10.6.1, and Windows 7 has been at the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) vendors for almost three months and has also had a few updates. How many times have you looked at your address book, noticed someone’s name, and been unable to figure out who the person was or where you’d gotten their information. Maybe someone handed you a business card at a party or trade show years ago and you stuck their info in your address book, but in any case, if you no longer recall the person, it’s unlikely that their info needs to be in your address book. RIM Releases Official BlackBerry Mac Software

It's been a long time coming, but after promises, previews, and unexpected leaks, BlackBerry officially released the desktop Mac client for its popular smartphone platform on Friday. Prior to this application, Mac BlackBerry owners had to rely on third-party software such as Mark/Space's The Missing Sync for BlackBerry, or PocketMac for BlackBerry, which RIM had included along with its handsets. BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac allows users to sync their contacts, calendar, notes, and to-do data between their Macs and BlackBerrys as well as installing and managing applications for the phone. On the Mac side, data can sync with iCal, Address Book, Mail, or any other applications that use Mac OS X's SyncServices, such as Microsoft Entourage. read more...
