MacBooks Sweep Consumer Reports Ratings

Apple’s scored itself a trifecta with the release of the June issue of Consumer Reports. If it weren't for the magazine's legendary reliability and highest ethical standards, we might have gone so far as to say that CR had a little crush on the Infinite Loop folks. The venerable publication gave the company top rankings in three of its notebook categories: 13-inch machines, 14-inch to 16-inch laptops, and 17-inch models. The MacBooks bested their competitors, despite the lower cost of many of the Windows machines rated. The $2,000 15-inch MacBook Pro, for example, scored a 75 out of 100 compared to the runner up, a $700 Toshiba Satellite that scored only 64 points. read more...

Apple, Verizon Contemplating iPhone Deal?

A version of the iPhone for Verizon could be coming next year, claims USA Today. The newspaper cites "people familiar with the situation," who say that Apple is in negotiations with Verizon, and in fact has been talking with the carrier for several months, back to the point before Apple CEO Steve Jobs took a medical leave of absence. The diminished participation of Jobs has not stopped efforts, say USA's sources. read more...

In Praise of Directory

With the release of Mac OS X 10.5, Apple introduced an application called Directory. Designed to work hand-in-hand with Mac OS X's Open Directory service, Directory provides information similar to Address Book, but greatly expanded. Starting with my first computer when I was five, an IBM PS2 Model 30 (without a hard drive), I've been loyal. I started with DOS, then Windows 3, 3.1, 95, and then XP. Then came Vista.
